It is perhaps better to just focus on one task at a time. Multitasking is not what you think.
In her TED talk, leading journalist Manoush Zomorodi describes what she learnt from speaking with neuroscientists and cognitive psychologists.
From watching this TED talk, it seems that multitasking is fake news! Multitasking does not exist. Dr Daniel Levitin described to Manoush what is happening when we multitask. Instead of performing multiple tasks at the same time, we are actually shifting from one task to the next and using up neural energy every time. This is costly, as there is only a limited supply. All the shifting of our attention from facebook, to messages, to emails, to the television, to the person interrupting you, to cooking, or daily tasks or more, is using up a lot of our energy. When we are very stressed, or tired we tend to do this more rapidly and apparently we are more likely to check our social media. What about the opposite of multitasking, boredom. The experts explained how boredom can activate the "default mode network” of our brains. How does the default mode work? Well, our daydreaming allows our brains to go beyond the conscious and just tip into the subconscious part of the mind. Just there, is where special connections happen; the default mode. Perhaps your brain likes being bored, it may even spark some creativity and increase productivity.
Other great thinkers agree. Elizabeth Gilbert the author of eat, pray, love speaks of the idea that creativity comes in the non-thinking spaces. While Deepak Chopra, medical practitioner and a pioneer of integrative medicine also advises to ‘take time to be silent’.
